Research

The main research interests are clinical tests to determine the physical condition of animals, especially biochemical and genetic analyses. We have studied the significance of pancreatic specific lipase, established new inflammation markers, and analyzed genetic mutations related to obesity risk in cats and dogs. In 2023, our graduate student presented data on breed-specific comparisons of blood biochemical measurements at the 32nd Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Veterinary Nursing, and achieved an Encouragement Award for the study. In recent years, we have also been conducting research on the molecular biology of tumor cell lines established in our laboratory.

Guidance policy for graduate students

In the Master’s Program, students aim to acquire a wide range of knowledge and skills related to research. Students acquire various blood assays, genetic tests, ELISA, cell culture techniques, statistical analysis, etc. In the doctoral course, students develop their research on deeply focused themes and aim to become independent researchers. Additionally, they will broaden their research insights and acquire leadership skills in conducting experiments through the instruction of other graduate and undergraduate students. Students also join our veterinary practices, experience a series of clinical operations, such as assessment of patients, clinical examinations and communication with patient-owners, and develop the ability to supervise veterinary nursing students at university hospitals.

Note

In human medicine, there are many paramedical professions such as nutritionists, laboratory technicians, physical therapists etc. On the other hand, only veterinary nurses are nationally certified in veterinary medicine in Japan. Therefore, veterinary nurses are expected to participate in a wide range of tasks. Clinical examination is an important area in which veterinary nurses are directly involved. We believe that it is a significant mission of veterinary nurses with master or doctoral degrees to study and develop it as practitioners, instructors and researchers.
